Building Strong Communities

About us
Rhiza Foundation empowers township communities in South Africa towards a sustainable living.

We acknowledge that problems within poor township communities are complex and have tailored our approach towards addressing this. Instead of focusing on one specific area, Rhiza Foundation has four focus areas to holistically empower communities. Education, healthcare, skills development and enterprise development programmes ensure that current and future generations are empowered. All employees have a township background which makes Rhiza Foundation embedded within the township communities.
The video above is specifically about our skills development project and reflects well what Rhiza Foundation is about and wants to achieve:
Rhiza Babuyile is our South African implementing partner. The local team is well equipped to implement the projects well. Our UK team is involved with the planning, monitoring & evaluation, and impact reporting and is in close contact with the local organisation.
FOCUS AREAS
Enterprise Development

Our programme is focused around the promotion of entrepreneurship in the township.

Mobile Clinic

This mobile clinic drives through the township of Diepsloot in Johannesburg and visits schools, people at home, community centres and many other areas where access to healthcare services is otherwise as good as dormant. Not only basic healthcare services are offered but the mobile clinic also offers dental services and mother- and childcare including vaccinations, ultrasound checks, family planning advice and many other services. On an annual basis, this mobile clinic offers services to 15.000 patients.

Early Childhood Development Centre Upliftment

In the Johannesburg township of Thembisa, over 40 Early Childhood Development Centres have been uplifted to date. We have chosen the Ebuhleni centre to showcase here. This centre has been refurbished, its staff has been trained and we have assisted towards meeting requirements for government grants. The result: improved quality of teaching, improved happiness of parents, improved results in school, sustainable funding of the school, improved facilities such as the toilets and the kitchen (leading to improved nutrition).

Fashion & Design

In the Johannesburg township of Orange Farm, Rhiza Foundation has a Fashion & Design skills development and production centre. This centre offers training to township youth from Orange Farm and offers employment opportunities after completion of the training through different channels. One of these channels is through our linked social enterprise called Township Fleva. Products of Township Fleva are sold to corporations in South Africa including a supermarket that procures thousands of products for all stores throughout South Africa. Through this program, Rhiza Foundation not only provides essential skills but also job placement opportunities while contributing to the local economy.
